An autumn evening in Hobbiton, beginning in Bag End. You stand in the hall just inside the green round door, with its brass knob in the middle, looking out down the garden and over the village, then go in to the parlour, where Bilbo reads by the fire with the tea things beside him and his sword hangs over the mantel. (With reduced motion, you begin there, by the fire.) The passage runs back into the Hill past little round doors: the dining room laid for an unexpected party, the study, the bedroom, the kitchen with the kettle on the range, the pantry, the larder, and the cellar. Out of the door and down the Hill, Bagshot Row passes the Gaffer's at Number 3 on the way to the Party Field, where the Party Tree stands in the great pavilion hung with lanterns and, after dark, folk dance round while a fiddler plays on a barrel. The road runs on down through the village past a farm with sheep, hens, straw skeps, and a scarecrow, its reaped wheat stood up in stooks across the road and its orchard beyond, crosses the Water by the stone bridge below Sandyman's mill, and goes on past the Ivy Bush to Bywater and the Green Dragon by the Pool. Hobbits are about, walking the lanes with baskets, smoking pipes on the inn benches and blowing smoke rings, drinking in the gardens, hoeing, and fishing. Smoke curls up from chimneys all over the valley, geese go over, and once it's dark the moon is up and there's a shooting star now and then. You can walk about, sit by the fire, put the kettle on, and say hello to the hobbits.
